Sprouts: Oct 21-23 (CORE)

As we continue to learn about Autumn and observe the changes taking place outside, the Sprouts used some leaves foraged last week to create ‘leaf art’. The leaves had been pressed for easier use and the students used their shapes to create a picture.

Oakley had asked about the length of a red-tailed hawk’s wingspan, so we explored that on Monday. The Sprouts used measuring tools to find the length and then wanted to know what their own “wing” span was. They worked in pairs to find measurements and brought home their completed findings on Monday. Today we reviewed the hawk’s life cycle and completed another worksheet for their portfolios. We also read “The Hawk Shadow,” which taught us that hawks represent protection.

With the leftover apples from Apple Land, we chose to make another batch of applesauce! Revisiting the process allowed the students to brainstorm the best way move through our second round, assigning roles to each other. We have quite the process to peel apples! 😅 Their favourite part is eating all the skin. 😆Today we mashed the apples and tasted our creation! It was loved by all.

This week I introduced our ‘Mystery Bag’ activity. This learning opportunity allows students to ask questions, become critical thinkers and also build on their descriptive language. Each week until the end of May, one student will have a turn to bring in an object from home for this activity. If it is your child’s turn, I ask that they hide the object in their home bag, lunch bag or that they come to get the mystery bag from me to keep the secret alive for the activity. We will start this coming Monday with: Lola.

For our ‘Well-Being Wednesday’ period this week, ‘Drum Healing’ was introduced. This concept is centred around our magical SOM drums and the loving vibrations that they emit. This mindfulness practices involves the students laying in a comfortable position while someone uses their drum to play sounds as they walk around the room. Everyone enjoyed this experience and all will get a turn to lead as the weeks progress.
