Through our week was short, we had tons going on!
On Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting a student-teacher: Mr. Corbin Smalls! As part of the Seedling & Sapling Badge Work Program the students can level up their magic badge by teaching a lesson to the Sprouts. Corbin taught the class about chameleons which connected nicely to our spirit day visitors last week. He shared some information with the Sprouts and then sent them on a scavenger hunt to find chameleons around the room that were blending into pieces of our classroom. It was a fun and creative lesson that the Sprouts very much enjoyed! Great job Corbin 👏🏼.
With Family Day having happened on Monday, we dove more into our school teaching of “Kinship” this week. The students were reminded that kin means family, and ship means connection. Our teaching states: I belong to my community. We talked about who our kin could be: those we are related to, friends, classmates, teachers, Mother Nature, animals, anyone we love. We read the story “Our Class is a Family” and discussed how we care for each other while we are at school and how we belong to our community. Using foraged materials from the fall, and some buttons - each student created their immediate family portrait and I helped them label it.
Today we read “Do Trees Have Mothers?” and learned how all trees in a forest are connected to one another through their roots. Mama trees can send water, love and medicine to their babies this way. This brought us back to the conversation around kin and how nature is part of that for us - as we are animals. I then explained what a ‘family tree’ was and we created them. They did a great job! Both projects came home today.
Preston made his Food Magic project today, kicking off our first one of the year! He created ‘Rainbow Salad in a Jar’. He brought the jarred salad home but shared a bowl full of coloured yumminess with our class! Almost everyone tried it and absolutely LOVED it! The veggies used were: peppers, cabbage, corn, & spinach. Preston brought his favourite salad dressing which was a mixture of apple cider vinegar, oil and maple syrup. Way to go Preston! I am so proud of you, Chef P! 👏🏼
It will be Jude’s turn for Mystery Bag next week.
Love all these so much
