Seedlings & Saplings CORE Mar 3-5

Writer: Jessica SmallsJessica Smalls

This week started with Pamela in for a supply day while Jessica was away. Students were supported through a new morning routine of 30 minutes of free learning time after calendar and it worked wonders. More students are achieving the results they are wanting and THAT is the true reason why we are here.

In language centers this week our focus was on working on our Creature short stories that have them travelling their world. All students have completed their first draft now so they can begin with fresh eyes when we return from the break next week.

In math centers this week, we reviewed measurement in centimetres, inches and units (feet and hands were used), and enjoyed a short lesson on the basics of area (related to arrays and multiplication) and perimeter which introduced the concept of circumference. Everyone measured the circumference of another student with a piece of yarn, then measured with a ruler in centimeters and inches and recorded our data.

At lunch Tuesday, we had a short recess lesson for those that wanted to learn and observe of how to tap a sugar maple tree. We are collecting sap for this week and into the beginning of March break, then we will shut down our tapping operation for the year.

In magic centers, students had free range to continue working on creating their creatures AND working on their badge work. When it comes to badge work, students have a goal sheet in their binders to keep track of what they want to learn about. They also have a ring with punch cards for each magic subject so they can see how far they have yet to go. I will be adding a flow chart for badge work process to our classroom after the break to support understanding for all students.

So many cute creatures were created! I am so proud of all efforts! We have a few friends still finishing up their creatures when we return from the holiday.

Wednesday afternoon we made space for badge work presentations!! All students who were willing and able to present their completed work volunteered to present to the class. All who presented did an amazing job of sharing their learning with the class. Special congrats to Ellie, Island, Zoë and Kassidy on their presentations this week.

When we return to the classroom we will be in full business immersion mode!

Create a magical March Break everyone!
