Seedling & Saplings CORE Jan 20-22

In language this week we began looking at spelling rules as a while group, and students shared the words they know that end with an S sound and the silent letter E. We carried on with our worksheets, spelling tests and language assessments as well.

In math this week, Seedlings were reintroduced to patterns within the number system. We explored skip counting and they began learning about multiplication. We had a rich discussion around readiness for this concept as our seedlings shared whether multiplication made sense to them yet. Saplings continued to focus on their first math assessment, with some students clarifying long division and successfully following the steps on their own, and others building their speed with big number addition with carrying and multi number multiplication. On Wednesday students played math games too...Uno and Prime Climb were the winners.

This week in our Magic Centers, we explored feelings and introduced a new process to our afternoons. Students will not return from recess to identify how they are feeling and how they would prefer to feel on our Feelings Tree. Then they all have 15 minutes to DO an action (we have action cards to make choosing simpler) that they believe will help them shift. All students did fantastic work in this area this week each day and were so proud and excited to see that their feelings can change quickly with a little action. They know this process as Self Compassion...giving ourselves what we need like we would do for others.

We also explored tone of voice this week and how that relates to our facial expression, and how it sounds to receive and say things in a negative, neutral or positive way. After discovering that emotional expression is held in the forehead and eyebrows, we discussed self control and related back to our energy experiments early in the year. We all agreed that we are responsible for our own feelings and no person can make us feel anything we aren't ready and willing to feel on our own. They recognize that when we share space we also get to ask ourselves in the feelings we are feeling belong to us.

On Wednesday students set their goals and worked on their badge work all afternoon with many students exceeding their goal and realizing they are capable of far more than they thought in an afternoon.

Student lessons will be starting next week. Ethan is our first teacher and will be sharing how to make Bean Burritoz (his spelling) and all present will get to try them if they choose. Leading a food magic lesson is part of our level 3 badge work for our graduating students.
