Seedling & Sapling Outdoor Oct 17&18

Seedlings and Saplings got into some fire building Thursday, where we reviewed fire safety rules and how to build a debris fire. Once the fire turned into coals we experimented with the elements to see what would help or hinder the fire.

Ethan discovered a gloating cedar leaf in the yard!!! This prompted our learning around spiders and how they make their silk. Students then went for a hike to find Y sticks to create some spider webs for next week! We also learned about Wooly Bear Caterpillars and we are on the hunt for one that we can bring into our backyard to watch its evolution in the spring.

On Friday, Ethan and I had a rich morning discussing around the experience we both had listening to Dr Kimmerer speak Thursday night at Centennial Hall. She is the author of Braiding Sweetgrass and our Saplings study the youth version in our program. Our conversation led to many definitions that we began inquiring about to make even more connections. We will be writing a letter to Dr. Kimmerer to share more about what we are doing here at The School of Magic, as it aligns with her vision of the future for all <3
