On Thursday, the Sprouts set out on a ‘seed hunt,’ as we continue to complete pages from within our Nature Guides. Seeds that we found included: oak, spruce, dandelion, milkweed, aster, goldenrod, teasel & burdock.
We all came together to paint our four directions symbol onto the special piece of tree that Stella has selected last week. This slice of spruce showed the quadrants of our four directions clearly. Each student present was able to paint one of the 4 quadrants. We now have this special symbol created for our outdoor circles, which mirrors on daily morning circle during our Core days.
We also learned how to use a flint stick this week. It’s a tricky task, but everyone gave it a go! Stella and Ethan made big sparks while Jessica successfully lit her kindling, allowing us to see the completion of the task. We all appreciated the warmth of the fire today.
The Sprouts went on a ‘Letter Sound Hunt’ today. Oakley and Lola each had their own paper plate which had all of the letters of the alphabet on it. Each time we found something along our walk that started with the sound of one of the letters, they were able to fold that letter over.
Seedlings & Saplings engaged in exploration of the muscles in the body. They were introduced to the three types of muscle and the many shapes that muscles take on. Once we learned some scientific names, we engaged in a hunt around to see if we could find the shapes of different muscles in nature....and we did! We discovered leaves that take on muscle shapes and that allowed students to think outside the box and guess what might look like some of the muscles shapes, like feathers. We didn't find feathers, however the students realized quickly that nature is very much connected in so many ways.
On Friday, we engaged in some word finding around muscles in chunks, and ran around in joyful ways outside in between so we didn't feel so chilly.
Seedlings and Saplings had a wonderful time engaging with our Sprout buddies in the outdoor program too and much time was spent building and creating fire from scratch and foraging for new things we haven't seen before.
