Nov 21&22 (OUTDOOR)

This Thursday morning the Seedlings and Saplings extended their animal card learning to the web of life and created webs by adding their animal from their card, then adding what the animal eats and what eats their animal. It was an eye opening experience! We also made space to play a game about pollution...this week pollution won, and we will try again next week.

The Sprouts completed their Seed Book with additional seeds that had been foraged last week. Each student helped to identify and print the names of the seeds, taping in our found examples. Using a non-fiction book about Trees, Leaves & Seeds to support our project, the students became interested in one of the facts we read about pinecones: that they close when wet and open when dry. We decided to try this out with spruce cones and were able to observe the transformation of the scales closing. We have since let those pinecones dry out and will check to see if they opened back up on Monday.

Afterwards, both groups came together to forage dry wood and leaves on a wet day. Students learned that evergreen trees often have lower branches that are already dead and dry, which these are great for building a fire when everything is wet. They also learned that dry leaves can be found within leaf piles or in more sheltered areas. We also learned that the dry fluffy bits that catch the fire are really important if we wish to continue to create fires with sparks from our fire sticks.

On this windy Friday, the Sprouts listened to the story ‘Millicent & the Wind,’ followed by a discussion about how we can tune into to nature. We shared examples of how we already do that while grounding each day and when we ask the plants for permission prior to foraging from them. We laid down on the ground and observed what the wind was playing with above us. We then made ‘wind sticks’ by tying pieces of string and ribbon to a specially foraged stick. Our wind sticks showed us which way the wind was blowing, allowing us to review directions. We took them to the park and allowed the wind to show us which way to go.

When we returned from our windy walk, Lola suggested we make a leaf craft. We decided to make windy hair portraits with foraged leaves. We recalled our learning about where to find dry leaves and collected a variety of colours before creation started. They turned out great of course!

On Friday morning, Ethan and I played a new games called Punderdome - Ethan is a pun-a-holic, and is always playing with words in creative ways through the school day, so this was a fun experience for a punster like him! The following are some of the puns we created from prompts in the game. We hope you get a laugh...or a groan...because that is the way with puns sometimes!
