Thursday
Today I shared with the students about our special visitors coming next Thursday. We created a list of questions that we have about Guinea pigs for Trixie and created some prediction art; drawing what they think Sushi and Wasabi will look like. They are all very excited!
The students have been wanting to create their own scavenger hunts as they were inspired by Ethan’s escape room challenge on our rainy day indoors recently. Each student created 5-10 items to hide and had a challenge for their peers to complete after finding them all. It was awesome to see their individual creativity shining through and allowed them all to practice teamwork as well. Our hunts continued after lunch and then we squeezed in a short hike.
Friday
Today we enjoyed a cool morning for our morning activites. Once we were complete we read The Diary of a Worm, as worms were part of our morning meditation. It was a very funny book and we loved the antics Worm and Spider got up to in the story.
After our morning story, we hiked to the strawberry patch and picked 30 strawberries!!! They were delicious and we sorted them out in our hands so everyone had 10 to make it fair.
After berries we assembled Ethan's dragon kite that he brought to school this week. Once assembled, we reviewed the tips in the package and launched the dragon kite high into the sky!!! It was flying well....until it wasn't. The Dragon chose to perch in a tree so we could persevere in our attempts to bring Dragon back to Earth.
We considered many strategies, including:
-thinking about climbing the tree....the branches were too thin, prickly and there were thorny bushes all around the base, so we chose not to utilize this one for safety reasons
-hiking to the forest for big sticks...we collected two, one log and one smaller branch. We carried them back and learned the big log didnt quite reach.
-pulling on the string of the kite....we did this hoping the branches would flap and let the kite go...it didn't.
-calling In the Spirit of the Wind and Sky with part of our 7 Directions song (Oakley's idea and he led us in song)...we even tried singing and pulling the string together...with no success.
-lashing the small stick to the big stick with a piece of rope...we were able to lash them tightly and with the added length, we were able to reach the Dragon Kite!! Ethan took a time lapse video of me working through the process to bring the Dragon to Earth...for your enjoyment (I needed to lay down after lol)....we did it! We persevered and thought outside the box and freed the Dragon Kite with no damages!! The link below is to the time elapsed video.
After the kite was free, we hiked back to the school for lunch. We ate and crafted and played and created measuring sticks with markers to see how tall we were then spent some time listening to music and being silly ♡
After lunch we headed to the park for the wide open space to fly the Dragon Kite once again....this time we stayed away from trees. We played a little in the park and headed to the backyard for sharing board!
Happy weekend everyone!
