Thursday

Today we were able to spend 2/3 of our day outside. 🙌🏼 We started the morning as usual while also making space for our “star warm-up”. This is a variety of movement activities printed on stars that are spread out around the yard. The students worked as a team to complete them all and warm their bodies.

We came in just before lunch and decided to make some chalk paint to try on the snow during our hike. We also read a story about animals in winter and discussed the different homes that animals have during the winter.

With this knowledge, we did a little experiment with small containers of gelatin. We created the mixture together (which started as a liquid ) and I filled a small jar for each of them. We each then found a spot in the backyard that felt like a good shelter space for our “animal”. We left the jars in those spots as we took our afternoon hike and then came back to observe changes. Some students left their animal in an open area or on top of snow - those jars had solidified. Those who left their jar on top of leaves had less solidification. The students concluded that their shelter spots were not as sheltered as they had thought and therefore would like to try again next week. Some noted that they may try to find a “burrow or cave” like suggested in our book.

Friday

Today we welcomed Ethan's Mom, my student teacher, and our newest supply teacher to our day! Pamela was learning about how Friday's roll!

It was a mighty rainy day, so we began inside for our morning exercises. After a short dance party, we expanded on learning about where animals sleep in Winter from yesterday with a story about a Squirrel losing some of their nest and food to a Crow in the night. I brought in some laminated cards from my room about the Bear's annual cycle of activity and we connected that to the four directions, the seasons and acted like bears going through the different parts of their annual cycle. It was fun to pretend to be a Bear!

We went outside afterward and got lost in the snowbank. We initially went out looking for bears and what might work for a bear den, then we decided to build our own dens in the snowbank. We shovelled and played and bricked up our den and in the end it was kind of cozy! Pamela made a bear in the snow and we gave some love to the trees that were being trimmed along the edge of the parking lot.

We came back inside because we were all soaked through our gear!! We played games together, read books, ate, chatted, enjoyed our tea and I made surprise double chocolate cookies for everyone....parents and grand parents should have some cookies to enjoy tonight as well. We patched up our sharing board and reflected on our day before tidying up.

Make a fantastic weekend and enjoy all this wet packing snow!
