Thursday

Today we started our day with some fun imaginative play with the Sprouts hosting a birthday party for Ethan’s stuffed giraffe. 😆 There was birthday cake and party tricks, as well as ice cube cookies for party favours. Such fun!

Before starting circle we got ourselves nice and warm by participating in the Star Card activities. I left the stars blank and placed them around the yard, inviting the students to come up with their own movement activities once they reached one. They took turns leading and enjoyed the creative movement.

We used the tarps to create a shelter on the climbers after circle. Within our shelter we discussed the characteristics of it and revsiitied our discussion around animal shelters, last week. The students pointed out that our shelter had 2 walls and comfort/warmth on the bottom. They suggested that 4 walls would be best for any shelter as we thought about where we would put our second batch of gelatin animals this week. The students found new and more protective spots for their animals before lunch and we checked on them afterwards. Though improvements had been made, they unfortunately weren’t enough to keep the gelatin liquified. The students reflected on their experience and concluded that digging into the ground to create a burrow or taking shelter in a tree hollow may be more successful, which is why animals do so. There were a lot of great takeaways.

We ventured over to visit Doug today: our Douglas Fir Tree friend. We hung out in the fir forest where students enjoyed sledding, foraging from a less familiar space, and connecting with the trees. Barrett found a tree named ‘Love’ and noticed it had a little ‘baby’.

Friday

We hosted Pamela again today, and started indoors this morning with our morning circle and reflection time. Afterwards we had an ingredient scavenger hunt! Ethan and Lola had dance party and a fun time finding the 12 items around the room, identifying what they were, and writing them down on the whiteboard. During the scavenger hunt we took a break for some yoga and some singing bowl time and found more scavenger hunt items when we started cleaning up! Students considered what we might be making with our ingredients, and decided on double chocolate cookies!! They were correct!

After a little snack we headed out for our hike. We checked out some icicles and how they were acting like stalactites and stalagmites, then notices some little "burrows" against the front building walls between the garden and the building. We discussed how we found leaves in there and connected that back to the owl story from the morning. We spent some time playing in the snow mountain on the edge of the parking lot, moved some snow boulders with our bare hands and explored carving, gravity and checked on our shelter construction from last week. Some of the walls were still there!

After our play we left for our hike and were on a hunt for squirrel homes. We read a book before circle about an owl home in a tree trunk and noticed it was full of leaves to keep everyone warm in the tree. We talked about the squirrel homes far up in the trees that keep squirrels warm all winter and sway in the wind. We counted 5 or 6 squirrel homes along our walk. We stopped to see Doug again and toboggan down the little hill. Ethan and Lola both took turns running, chasing and sledding and we turned back when our toes and faces were chilly. Sorry, no pictures as we were all engaged <3

Upon returning to the school we had our lunch, warmed up with tea and got busy making 33 heart shaped double chocolate chip cookies to share with the whole school for our Spirit Day/Friendship Day/February Birthday celebration this coming Wednesday. Afterwards we enjoyed our sharing board time, packed up and enjoyed a cookie each, leaving plenty for the community on Wednesday.

Make a fantastic weekend!
